The fastest non-motorised sport in the world will again see
the slopes this year at Turoa Ski Area in October and Chris Gebbie will be there to defend
his national title.

After his victory at last year's event on a shortened course, Chris
travelled to Canada and Europe to compete in the World Cup circuit. He achieved a new personal
best of 204.800Km/hr and an overall World Cup standing of 22nd.
Chris joined the elite 200K Club acheived by only five other New
Zealanders since Kiwis starting competing in this event in 1984 and is now ranked 3rd behind Lisa
Powell (209.424km/hr) and Hugh Greirson (205.597km/hr).
This year's event will be held at Turoa Ski Area from the 9th -
14th October 2004.
The ultimate Speed Track run down the Mangaehuehu Glacier will
not be used this year after a huge avalanche swept down the entire glacier last week and gouged
the glacier base through the Speed Track.
The glacier is outside the ski area boundary and inside the Tongariro
National Park. Legislation prevents any groomer activity in this area so it would be impossible
to move any of the hugh snow slabs and other debris from the runout area this season.
The race has been moved to the #2 track inside the ski area boundary.
This course is quite exciting, with a large right turn at the start of the run out. Course record
is 154km/hr, this year it is hoped that speeds of 170km/hr will be reached.

It is expected that up to 50 competitors will dust off the long
boards again this season to try to knock Chris of his podium and claim the title of fastest skier
in New Zealand for 2004.
