14th October 2002
New Zealand Speed Ski National Champion's Announced

Only day one of three days of racing could be held at the 2002 Volkl New Zealand Speed Ski Champs due to poor weather conditions at Turoa Ski Area.

Speed Skiing events traditionally start with low start levels on the course to enable the athletes to feel comfortable with the increased speeds leading up to the final on the final day of racing. Consequently, the speed recorded on the Speed Track course on Turoa’s Mangaehuehu Glacier were quite low this year.

The National Speed Ski Champions for 2002 were Chris Gebbie (138.674km/hr) and Janine McLroy (87.209km/hr). Russell Baunton was second in the KL Men’s class with a speed of 120.481km/hr and Scott Mazey was third with 119.363km/hr.

Competitors completed the course in other classes including snowboard, Brad Galloway (117.187km.hr), production class Terry Cheeseman, (100.671km/hr) and junior snowboard, Joram Makuru, 11 year old (88.932km/hr).
